Русское сильный соответствует английскому strong лишь в некоторых значениях и употреблениях. Так, strong 1. — физически сильный:a strong man (body) — сильный человек (-ое тело);
strong 4. — интенсивный:a strong feeling (desire, sense of duty) — сильное чувство (желание, чувство долга);
strong 5. — эффективный:a strong poison (weapon, heat) — сильный яд (-ое оружие, -ая жара).
(2). Русскому сильный, кроме strong, соответствуют и другие английские слова. Сильный, интенсивный относительно природных явлений соответствует английскому heavy:a heavy rain (snow, storm, dew) — сильный дождь (снег, -ая роса),
а также сочетанияheavy traffic — сильное движение
иheavy blow — сильный удар.
Сильный относительно болезни, боли, травмы соответствует bad:a bad headache (cold, cough) — сильная головная боль (простуда, -ый кашель).
Сильный относительно эмоциональных состояний соответствует great, powerful:to make a great (powerful) impression — произвести сильное впечатление;
it is a powerful film (story, play) — сильный фильм (рассказ, -ая пьеса).
Сильный в значении хороший — good:a good student — хороший, сильный студент.
